The Quarantined Life: Hoarders and Personal Space Issues
For Men Only: Egos and Erasers
Sports. Work. Vacations.
Men love to brag. I know this because I am a man. We love to see favorite sports teams win and we will remind you when they are winners. We also like to complain and give a doctoral dissertation on what the team needs to do when they have lost 5 games in a row. When it comes to our jobs, we like to boost when are doing well and getting promoted. We often tie who we are into our jobs and how well these jobs are going. And then there are vacations. We work hard and we want to play hard too.
Egos can be seductive and toxic.
For us men, we can blame it on Adam. Yes, Adam from the Garden of Eden. If he had listened to God and not let his ego get the best of him, we would not have this battle. This battle within us is called our “sinful nature”. Our sinful nature is something we have inherited from Adam from the Fall in the Garden. Adam had a smooth relationship with God. And he blew it. The serpent (Satan) tempted Adam and Adam wanted power and he gave in.
This ego haunts us today. Some men will never take responsibility at work and will throw others under the bus to look good or advance their careers. Some men will get into fist fights at sporting events all because their team was criticized by a fan of the opposing team. And then there are vacations. There is nothing wrong with taking nice vacations but when the only peace you have is in the expensive vacations. You missed it.
As men, we have missed our target.
Culture has told us who we are and who we are not.
This is dangerous because our identity comes from God. But it is difficult to envision in today’s culture. God’s plan for us is far better than what the world has to offer. If you want to see the identity crisis in America, go log onto Facebook. People are searching for meaning and purpose. Men and women are looking for connection. And there is nothing wrong with virtual connection but it is not the same as in person.
We must kill the ego that our culture tells us is natural.
Men abandoning their families for their young and cute secretary----is not natural.
Throwing away your moral compass at work just to advance up the food chain----is not natural.
And trying to keep up with the Joneses-----is not natural.
To kill the ego that we are told is natural……...we must dare to be different.
God does not want you to act like everyone else at work. God does not want you chasing after temporary fixes that only bring temporary satisfaction with long-term pain. To kill the ego, we need an eraser.
The eraser is Jesus. Not the Sunday School Jesus that has hair like Fabio and dresses in Abercrombie and Fitch.. Not the political Jesus who spits on Democrats and back hands the Republicans. No, we need the Jesus who will do heart surgery on us. The Jesus who will transform our heart and mind and align us with His purpose. The Jesus who will go into the dark places where we hide because we are afraid what people will think and who we might “offend”.
Imagine all of your sins, mistakes, and failures…...all written on a massive dry erase board.
Jesus walks up. And he wipes the board clean. BAM!!!
